Text is used primarily for navigation purposes. If you look on the left-hand side of most NextGen 7.9 and earlier KBM templates, the navigation is built with Active Text.

To add back attached to your template, click the icon in the Fields toolbar, and drag onto your template where you want it to be placed. You are then prompted with the Active Text dialog pop up. First, choose the table or leave it as default, and given a field name.

A good naming convention for active text is to always start the name with atxt_ then the field name.

activeText

Check or uncheck the underlined box to have your Active Text linked.

Types of modes:

Two State: Allows users to know whether the active text was clicked on or not.

Multi-state: allows the active text to have different color values. For example, I created an active text link that launched a future lab template pop up. If there was a scheduled future lab the color of the active text link was changed to blue, if that's scheduled Future Lab's date had passed the Active Text link was red. But when no future lab was scheduled for a patient, the active text link was green. Active text links are fun to work with; you can change the color value based on any number of triggers on your template.

Check out this image above, this is how I set up the active text links for my Future Lab's. Ok, the colors are going to be insanely ugly, but you get the point. As you can see there are three values, one, two, and three. I can create trigger(s) and assign that Active Text link those values, and it will change the color as needed.
