Note fields are generally used when 1000 or more characters are expected to be typed into a single text field.  In fact, at the NextGen User Group conference back in 2008, note fields were a big topic in several of the template development classes. Personally I avoid no fields at all cost because they are known to be able to crash the NextGen system if used improperly. Note fields are great for templates where dictation will be taking place such as HPI template.

To create note filled, click on the note field icon in the field toolbar and drag it onto the template display area where you want to be placed.

Giving it a unique name is important, perhaps with the prefix of nt_ or note_ for good development practices, and adjust the parameters to the needs of your template.

I was told, but I've not confirm this but if you were to do an evaluation through a trigger on a no field that has 1001 or more characters it will crash the NextGen system. The example I was brought up at the NextGen User Group conference was if you have a note filled on your template that does contain more than 1000 characters then you have a button that checked if the note field was empty or not, the trigger will be ran against the note filled and NextGen will crash. The word to the wize - to anyone that wants to use no fields, do thorough testing on your template before moving it into a production environment.

Remember when using note fields that the note is stored on the server as a rich text format, and not in the database. This may cause some issues if you plan on doing some sort of database reporting on that data.  Check your universal preferences for additional settings.
