NextGen's EHR Mobile Application

iPhone EHR ApplicationEarly this year NextGen announce (April, 2009), that they are developing and beta-testing and EHR Mobile application that can be used on moble devices such as the iPhone. This will allow user to connect wirelessly to the NextGen EHR to gain access and manage important patient information. From receint descusion from the NextGen Yahoo usergroup there seems to be some mixed emotions about this new idea.

From a tecchie side I can see why people would be excited for this to happen. It new and something that NextGen user have never been able to do in the past. Imagine physicians being able to access patient charts while at dinner or driving through town. You will also be able to lookup patient medication and allergy information, lab orders and results, and much more. That is a huge tool that could really benifit the busy life of a medical provider. But then there are those that bring up the issues of security and privacy. As we are all aware, NextGen take HIPPA regulations very seriously and Im sure that the new mobile application will take all of those into consideration.

Personally, as a developer - I hope to get the chance in the near future and test the NextGen EHR Mobile application and further build powerfully templates that could be used injuction with it.

What are your thought on this new product? Are you going to be first in-line to download it and get it implemented in your practice, or are you going to sit back and listen to the feedback?

Grants and Funding Opportunities

funds

As I was doing my daily research on NextGen (Quality Systems, Inc.) and finding outs whats the latest in the news, I found an interested statement online about NextGen that makes me proud to support the product. Over at www.BusinessWire.com, and article called "NextGen Healthcare Responds to Proposed Rule on Meaningful Use of EHRS with Educational Resources for Medical Providers" dated January 11, 2010. it says:

NextGen Healthcare is the only EHR vendor to help its clients identify and apply for appropriate grant opportunities through its Grants Resources Center. Clients can find valuable information and work with NextGen Healthcare to assess their opportunity to participate in “Beacon Communities,” “SHARP,” and other funding being made available as part of ARRA. Prospective clients can also learn about grant opportunities and NextGen Healthcare’s support while evaluating potential use of the company's products.

Why I Blog about NextGen EMR

Jason130x130For the past four years, I have been developing templates for NextGen clients all over the country. Template editing is a passion of mine; I've enjoyed learning the NextGen application and using the template editor to create templates that are being used by doctors today. NextGen has done a tremendous job giving their clients the power to improve and modify their current EMR environment, but developing NextGen templates can be a frustrating and time-consuming process. Once you understand all the features and functionality, and the way it communicates and works with the NextGen database, template development can become an art. It takes a deep understanding of programming fundamentals, user-interface design and intuition, and an understanding of the workflow of a medical facility to develop efficient and powerful EMR templates that can be easily used by office staff and medical providers. Template development is definitely not for everyone, a background in programming fundamentals (mainly, knowing when and how to use conditions, parameters, etc.) and SQL development is invaluable as the new working KBMs are released and more and more templates are dependent on stored procedures.

I encourage everyone with a desire to learn template editing to read my blogs, post comments, and use the NextGen user-groups as in excellent source for support. EMR Template Experts is probably the most powerful team of NextGen EMR experts in the NextGen consulting community, and we would be more than happy to help you and your medical practice with your EMR needs.

The purpose of my blogs are to provide a basic level of understanding of how to navigate and use the NextGen template editor. I will be going over all the icons in the toolbar, some good tips to know while developing, and some simple triggers that I use often. At this point I don't plan to blog on more in-depth and complicated subjects for the template editor because most people find that for most of their in-depth template development, an experienced NextGen certified professional template developer is better to customize their templates.

CPSP - Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program

Our team has just finished a template set for the CPSP (Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program) for a large multi-specialty group in Los Angeles. The CPSP department has just approved our template set for their live production environment.  The CPSP template is integrates smoothly into the current NextGen OBGYN templates and vise versa.  Many of the CPSP templates are built to record the patients initial, second trimester, and third trimester visits with the data being copied forward each visit.

The CPSP template set has been built with 16 medical record templates templates such as Family Planning Counseling, Group Class Visit, Individual Care Plan, Master Template, PFFQ (PERINATAL FOOD FREQUENCY QUESTIONNAIRE), Postpartum, and Prenatal.  We also integraded the use of System Templates in order for the users to quickly and easily maintain the list of referral sorces, instead of having to call us up to make those changes.

We appriciate the opportunity that we have been given to work with the CPSP team in LA.  Thanks for all your help!
